Wallpaper Samples: Why They’re Worth Ordering

Wallpaper Samples: Why They’re Worth Ordering

Last updated: August 2026

A practical guide from
La Muur WALLPAPER

SOUTH AFRICA

Wallpaper is one of the few things you choose online that ends up covering an entire wall.

That makes it surprisingly difficult to judge from a screen.

The colour changes between devices. Texture almost disappears in photographs. Patterns that seem subtle online can feel much bolder once they’re stretched across a full wall.

That’s why, whenever possible, we recommend ordering a sample first.
It’s a small step that makes choosing wallpaper much easier – and can prevent an expensive mistake later.

are WALLPAPER SAMPLES REALLY NECESSARY?

Why Photos Aren’t Enough

Modern product photography is beautiful.

It’s also carefully lit, professionally styled and viewed on a screen that may be warmer, cooler or brighter than someone else’s.

The wallpaper hasn’t changed.

Your screen has.

A sample lets you see the wallpaper in the only place that really matters: your own home.

Colour Changes More Than You Think

Modern product photography is beautiful.

It’s also carefully lit, professionally styled and viewed on a screen that may be warmer, cooler or brighter than someone else’s.

Even comparing a laptop with the screen of your device.

The wallpaper hasn’t changed.

Your screen has.

A sample lets you see the wallpaper in the only place that really matters: your own home.

Texture Can’t Be Judged Through a Screen

This is perhaps the biggest reason we encourage samples.

Texture is incredibly difficult to photograph.

Linen effect.
Grasscloth texture.
Plaster or Concrete finish.
Woven surface.
Subtle emboss.

These details often disappear online, yet they’re the very qualities that give a wallpaper its depth and character.

Seeing – and feeling – the surface makes all the difference.

Pattern Scale Is Easier to Understand

A pattern can look tiny on your phone and surprisingly bold once it’s repeated across a wall.

An A4 sample isn’t large enough to show the entire room, but it helps you understand:

– The scale of the pattern
– The spacing of the design
– The level of contrast
– How busy or quiet it feels

That’s often enough to tell whether a wallpaper feels right.

How We Recommend Testing a Sample

Don’t leave it on the kitchen counter.

Put it on the actual wall you’re considering.

Then live with it for a few days.

Look at it:

– In the morning
– At midday
– In the evening
– On a sunny day
– On a cloudy day

Notice how it feels rather than trying to judge it immediately.

The right wallpaper usually becomes clearer after you’ve spent a little time with it.

Our Wallpaper Sample Pack includes

Why We Don’t Offer Samples for Every Wallpaper

This is something we prefer to be upfront about.

Samples are available for the most popular wallpapers in The Edit, our in-stock range.

Our Reserve collection works differently.
These wallpapers are specially ordered and samples aren’t available in the same way.

Rather than promising something we can’t provide, we’d rather help you choose confidently from the ranges where samples are available – or answer any questions about a Reserve wallpaper before you order.

Is a Sample Worth It?

We think so.

Compared with ordering wallpaper for an entire room, a sample is a very small investment.

It gives you the chance to see the true colour, experience the texture, understand the scale and make your decision with much more confidence.

No photograph can tell you quite as much as your own wall.
